25-26 Freshman Academy at HMMA

At Helix Mentorship and Maritime Academy, we believe the 9th grade year sets the tone for a student’s entire high school journey. That’s why we’ve created Freshman Academy — a program designed to give our newest Sharks a strong foundation, both academically and socially.

Our Mission

Freshman Academy is dedicated to helping students transition successfully into high school by providing:

  • Strong Academic Support — Focused instruction in core subjects, including English I, Algebra I, Physical Science, and World Geography.
  • Character & Leadership Development — Through our PBIS program, mentorship, and enrichment opportunities, students learn responsibility, accountability, and teamwork.
  • College & Career Readiness — From day one, students are introduced to pathways that prepare them for advanced coursework, dual enrollment, and future maritime and technical opportunities.

What Makes Freshman Academy Unique

  • A dedicated team of teachers, administrators, and staff who specialize in supporting 9th graders.
  • A smaller learning community where every student is known, valued, and supported.
  • Special events and experiences such as field trips, field day, and team-building activities that build school pride and connections.
  • Clear promotion requirements to ensure students stay on track for graduation:
    • Earn 6 Carnegie Units (must include English I and Algebra I).
    • No more than 10 unexcused absences.

Building Sharks of the Future

Freshman Academy is more than just 9th grade classes — it’s a launchpad for success. By providing structure, support, and opportunities, we’re preparing students to thrive in high school and beyond.

Welcome to the Shark family — where the journey begins!
